Starting tonight at 7pm CET, I will be hosting the second of five Science of Logic pre-course sessions, in preparation for the Science of Logic course starting January 16th 2023. You can access the pre-course sessions via the community tab at Philosophy Portal. In the first session, I will be presenting, and we will be discussing, Hegel’s “Phenomenology of Spirit.” This text represents a crucial '“phenomenological turn” in Hegel’s thinking, which has the purpose of setting up Hegel’s logic. Some of the major themes we will cover include:
Science of experience as opening up the potential of speculative philosophy
Perspectival shift opens two series of representation: experiential and truthful
The truth of motivation and processes of conceptualisation
Relation between experience and conceptualisation, and the status of the “I”
The necessity of spirit to consummate satisfaction in historical work
Phenomenology represents the self and philosophy’s own heightened self-awareness
