Starting tonight (December 26th) at 7pm CET, I will be hosting the third of five Science of Logic pre-course sessions, in preparation for the Science of Logic course starting January 16th 2023.1 You can access the pre-course sessions via the community tab at Philosophy Portal. In the third session, I will be presenting, and we will be discussing, “Kant’s Critique” and “Fichte’s Freedom.” This presentation/discussion will give a necessary background and foundation for the types of ideas that constitute the origin of German Idealism. Some of the major themes we will cover include:
Hegel’s Logic as situated within the modernist Kantian critical turn
The difference between starting analysis with mental or physical space
Nature of Kant’s conception of mental space (empirical objects, ends)
Kant’s conception of reason as contrasted with sense experience
Fichte’s reformation of Kant with a thought-experiment regarding constraints
Fichte’s attempt to idealise Kantian dogmatism of an external thing-in-itself
Pros and cons of Fichte’s reformation of Kant
’s project
The seeds of Hegel’s response to both Fichte and Kant
